Sam has come into rescue due to his elderly owner no longer able to care for him as he needs to be cared for.
- Sam is 5 year and 4 months old, neutered Chessie/Lab mix.
- He is house trained, good with kids and playful with other dogs-he is also ok with cats.
- Sam needs leash work and a fenced yard for him to safely run and play.
- Ideal family would be active and willing to help him with his leash walking. He is learning to be better on a leash at his foster home.
- He also loves to swim and play ball.
Sam had a good check up when we got him-however, he is about 20 pounds over weight , and we tested and found he has low thyroid, so is now on meds for that and it will also help him lose some of the weight. Thyroid meds are very inexpensive, which is a plus. Sam is current with his vaccines, is micro chipped, and HW negative.
A Chessie/Lab mix is a great combination. Sam is a sweet, gentle dog who really wants to be loved and please his humans. He loves to lie at your feet and just hang out when you are in the house. He’s independent in the sense that he has a found a few spots to call his own and will just chill out and nap or watch out the window. When he is outside, he loves to play ball and will retrieve until he gets tired. We think his few extra pounds slow him down, but we are working on that! His leash walking has improved. He understands heel and is beginning to learn that he needs to sit when approaching a corner to cross. He is strong, so we have found that a pinch-training collar works best to keep his attention. He has some interest in passing cars so when we are outside, he sits and stays until they pass. He likes to play with Ellie, our 20 month old Chessie. Sam is the chilled ying to her puppy yang! They play tug-o-ball which is rather amusing to us humans! He is well house trained and alerts us when he needs to go outside. He is well behaved in the house and can be left alone without worry that he is going to chew up anything. Sam is a big, sweet, strong love who will be great addition to your loving home. He is great with other dogs large and small. He was great meeting new people and their teenage son.
Sam is waiting for a new family to love him the rest of his life-he will return that love to you. If you are looking for a big ol bubba teddy bear, Sam is your man.
