LULA

My name is Lula and I am a “big boned” female.  My foster mom says I look and amble like a Grizzly Bear Cub but I am much sweeter and just as cuddly. I should really define “big-boned” as it is pretty significant in my current situation. I weigh 98 pounds and am not overweight; I am just a Big Girl. I was left tied to the gate of a recycling center near Duluth, MN in August and was in 2 shelters until CRROW came and got me. I am learning how to live in a house and accept and give affection to humans. I initially only wanted to hang in the garage in my crate and be left alone.

The first few days I was here, my foster mom noticed that I walked funny and dragged my toes on my back legs so took me to the vet and they discovered I had Lyme’s Disease and some knee problems. After a series of x-rays, they discovered why I was probably abandoned and why I am not always feeling good, I have ruptured both my ACL’s and I have hip dysplasia. I am not a candidate for surgery due to my size and my independent nature. (I really don’t like to be messed with when I am hurting. I prefer to be left alone in my crate until the pain gets better.) I am not very good at regulating my activities as I am only 5 years old and I really want to run and play with all the other dogs in the neighborhood, but my foster mom has to keep my activities very limited until my knees stabilize a bit more. I will never be able to run and play like I want to but as long as I get a few short walks each day, a soft bed, a few bones or toys and most importantly, a loving family, I will be a happy girl.

I like having my sides scratched as my back legs don’t work very well for scratching and I am learning the joys of belly rubs. I love to be with people, especially when they pet me and understand my needs (the places I can’t reach) and restrictions (my hind end is often tender). I love toys that squeak, kongs and especially bones. I am rather hard on toys but I am also good in the house and only chew on the toys that are given to me. I am housebroken and on the occasion I bark but it is a low hoarse bark.

I would love to find a nice family either without other dogs or with another older/quiet dog as I like other canine companions but not young or energetic ones. I had a foster brother for a few weeks and I loved hanging out and sharing toys, bones and beds with him. He would sleep downstairs with me at night since I am not allowed to climb stairs (I like to climb stairs to hang with my foster mom but the vet said “No flights of stairs” because of my hips and knees). I will need to be on medication to manage the pain of my hips and knees and someone will need to watch my weight as I can’t get any heavier and I like treats, so I am not good at regulating my own weight.

If you can help me with my medical bills I would sure appreciate it. If so, please go to this Can you help? page and click my donate button! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
